Our Ocean School opens its doors in the Mentawai Islands
In the heart of the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia, a transformative initiative has taken root – Our Ocean School. After months of dedicated renovations, this groundbreaking institution opened its doors in the first week of January 2024. The vision behind Our Ocean School is not only to provide quality education but also to instill a profound sense of environmental responsibility, with a specific focus on the preservation of the oceans.

As the Mentawai Islands brace for a rapid increase in tourism, the urgency for community development and skill-building cannot be overstated. Our Ocean School stands at the forefront, addressing these challenges head-on by empowering local communities with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the evolving landscape. By supporting initiatives like Our Ocean School, we can ensure that the benefits of tourism reach every corner of the Mentawai Islands, creating a sustainable and inclusive future for generations to come.

Our Ocean School: Making Waves in Our First 10 Months
Our Ocean School has provided free English education to over 250 Mentawai students, with 90% learning English for the first time, addressing a major gap in local education. The school has hosted over 70 international volunteers, fostering cross-cultural exchange and helping students build confidence in English, especially valuable for future tourism work. With a diverse, inclusive student body, Our Ocean School plans to expand its reach, empowering more local youth for a brighter future.

What an exciting 2 weeks we have had enjoying our swimming programme with our amazing volunteer Emilie!!
Lessons delivered in English to broaden our English vocabulary in a fun and exciting way, whilst also LEARNING HOW TO SWIM 😍🏊🏼♀️
Believe it or not, even though most of these kids literally live on the beach.. they don’t know how to swim to SURVIVE! An essential life skill for all kids and community in our area.. and we hope this will be the first of many courses we deliver at Our Ocean School!

We have been playing a lot of kahoot this week - an educational online quiz game to test students learning - with our donated iPads/laptops/handphones.. it’s been so much fun!!
But also very competitive 🫣 hahaha
