This month, Our Ocean School proudly introduced two invaluable courses, Swimming and Basic First Aid, led by qualified Australian teachers. In our community, where nearly every family depends on the ocean for their livelihood and lives near the beach, these courses are transformative. Despite living so close to the sea, many community members don’t have access to formal education in swimming or safety skills. This lack of training has left families at risk when it comes to water-related incidents, as well as other everyday safety situations that could impact lives.

The Swimming Course has empowered students not only with physical skills but also with the courage and confidence needed to safely navigate the water. Many students, encountering structured swimming lessons for the first time, mastered floating, learned the basics of breaststroke, and practiced safely entering and exiting the water. In less than two weeks, they displayed clear improvement in technique and were more at ease with water play. Watching students, particularly those with no prior swimming experience, grow more comfortable and even enjoy time in the water was truly inspiring. For families whose livelihoods rely on the ocean, knowing how to swim and feel safe in the water is a profound, potentially life-saving change.

In the First Aid Course, students gained essential emergency response skills, equipping them with the ability to act calmly and effectively during a crisis. They learned to handle cuts and bruises, respond to common injuries like burns and bee stings, and apply simple techniques like pressure to control bleeding. Basic CPR training gave them an introduction to life-saving chest compressions, and older students were taught the recovery position for helping an unconscious person. With these skills, students are not only better prepared for emergencies but are also developing the confidence to protect themselves and others, especially in a community where medical help can sometimes be hours away.

Both courses have provided students with a foundation in safety and self-reliance, two life skills critical for the Mentawai community’s future. Our Ocean School is dedicated to empowering these young learners with tools that extend beyond academics, preparing them for the realities of their environment and helping them grow with confidence and resilience.

In just 10 months since opening its doors, Our Ocean School has proudly made a meaningful impact on our community in the Mentawai Islands by providing free English education to over 250 students, with 90% of them gaining access to English for the first time. In a region where schools rarely offer English programs, Our Ocean School is bridging the gap, opening up new opportunities for students to build skills that will serve them well into the future.

Our school has been a hub of cross-cultural exchange, welcoming over 70 western volunteers of all ages who’ve come from around the world to join our classrooms and help students practice English. This engagement goes beyond language skills—our students are growing in confidence as they learn to express themselves in English, a vital skill for those who may one day work in the tourism industry. With 75% of our student body being female and balanced representation of both Muslim and Christian students, we’re proud to foster an inclusive and diverse environment that reflects the spirit of our community.

Our Ocean School’s journey has only begun, but our students’ enthusiasm and progress affirm the importance of accessible education. With continued support, we look forward to expanding our reach, empowering even more local students, and building a brighter future for the Mentawai Islands.
