The Mentawai Islands, known for their pristine beauty and world-class surfing, are at a critical juncture with the recent opening of the international airport in North Sipora. While this development promises increased tourism and economic opportunities, the local communities fear they may be left behind in the wave of progress. One organisation at the forefront of this concern is Our Ocean School, which plays a crucial role in addressing the urgent need for community development and skill-building.

The situation

Late last year, the unveiling of the international airport just 15 minutes from Our Ocean School marked a significant milestone for the Mentawai Islands. This development is expected to bring a surge in tourism, particularly in surf tourism, as 2024 is projected to witness an unprecedented influx of visitors eager to experience the region’s renowned waves. Despite the promising economic prospects, local communities find themselves ill-equipped to capitalise on the impending tourism boom. The lack of essential skills such as English proficiency, hospitality expertise, and ocean awareness puts them at a disadvantage in securing job opportunities created by the surge in tourism. As a result, there is a pressing need for initiatives that empower these communities and bridge the gap in skills and knowledge.

Our Ocean School’s Vital Role

Our Ocean School emerges as a beacon of hope in addressing the challenges faced by the local communities. This non-profit organisation is committed to empowering the people of Mentawai through education and skill development, ensuring they are well- prepared to navigate the changing landscape of their region. The school is directing its attention to three essential areas based on feedback from the local community, identifying critical aspects and areas for upskilling as per their input. Currently English is the only course running with hope that, pending funding, in 2024 courses in hospitality and ocean awareness will be able to commence.

  • English Proficiency: With the surge in international visitors, proficiency in English is a crucial skill for the local population. Our Ocean School is working tirelessly to provide English language programs tailored to the specific needs of the community, enabling them to communicate effectively and seize job opportunities in the growing tourism sector.
  • Hospitality Skills: The hospitality industry is a key player in the tourism sector, and Our Ocean School recognises the importance of equipping locals with the necessary skills. Through training programs and workshops, the school hopes to help community members develop hospitality expertise, ensuring they can provide exceptional service to visitors and contribute positively to the region’s reputation.
  • Ocean Awareness: Preserving the natural beauty and integrity of the Mentawai Islands is paramount. Our Ocean School places a strong emphasis on ocean awareness, educating locals about sustainable practices, marine conservation, and responsible tourism. By instilling a sense of stewardship among the community, the school hope to ensure that the surge in tourism does not come at the expense of the region’s unique ecosystem.

In conclusion

As the Mentawai Islands brace for a rapid increase in tourism, the urgency for community development and skill-building cannot be overstated. Our Ocean School stands at the forefront, addressing these challenges head-on by empowering local communities with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the evolving landscape. By supporting initiatives like Our Ocean School, we can ensure that the benefits of tourism reach every corner of the Mentawai Islands, creating a sustainable and inclusive future for generations to come.

October 2024

In just 10 months since opening its doors, Our Ocean School has proudly made a meaningful impact on our community in the Mentawai Islands by providing free English education to over 250 students, with 90% of them gaining access to English for the first time. In a region where schools rarely offer English programs, Our Ocean School is bridging the gap, opening up new opportunities for students to build skills that will serve them well into the future.

Our school has been a hub of cross-cultural exchange, welcoming over 70 western volunteers of all ages who’ve come from around the world to join our classrooms and help students practice English. This engagement goes beyond language skills—our students are growing in confidence as they learn to express themselves in English, a vital skill for those who may one day work in the tourism industry. With 75% of our student body being female and balanced representation of both Muslim and Christian students, we’re proud to foster an inclusive and diverse environment that reflects the spirit of our community.

Our Ocean School’s journey has only begun, but our students’ enthusiasm and progress affirm the importance of accessible education. With continued support, we look forward to expanding our reach, empowering even more local students, and building a brighter future for the Mentawai Islands.
